See Glorious Green and Red Aurora Shimmer in stunning video

Part of the planet was treated to a wild festival of Northern Lights on Sunday evening. If you weren’t in a place where you could see the action, you can still have fun with a wonderful time lapse video captured in Sweden.

The European Space Agency’s SSA Space Weather Coordination Center shared eye-catching video aurora borealis in a tweet on Monday. The view is like looking at the sky through a marble. It shows waves and waves of swirling green and red aurora dancing across the frame.

The video comes from a camera at the Swedish Institute for Space Physics in Kiruna, Sweden. It is an all-sky camera, so it shows the view from horizon to horizon for the purpose of monitoring auroras. It takes one image per minute.

The vivid Northern Lights are caused by the sun spitting out a Coronal Mass Ejection, aka CME, a dramatic explosion of plasma. This CME arrived on Earth just as a solar wind (a stream of charged particles from the sun) was sailing around us. These ingredients combine for excellent Northern Lights conditions.

The sun’s been a little crazy lately, push flares and CMEs as its business ramps up. CMEs offer the gift of auroras, but they can also disrupt satellites and spacecraft and even impact power grids.

According to ESA, the lights were visible as far south as southern England and central Germany. Kiruna is known as a hotspot for Northern Lights action, so the camera there was treated to a dramatic sight.
