Samsung’s Hwaseong Campus Received Platinum Certification from the Alliance for Water Stewardship, Reflecting the Company’s Expanded Leadership Role in Water Stewardship for Semiconductor Sites Nationally and Globally
Samsung Electronics, a global leader in advanced semiconductor technology, today announced that its Hwaseong campus has received Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) International Water Stewardship Standard certification at the highest level: Platinum. Samsung Electronics is the first company in the world to receive a series of international certifications for its water resource management capabilities. It is also the first time that a Korean company has achieved Platinum certification.
The AWS International Water Stewardship Standard is a globally applicable framework for primary water users to understand their water use and impact and to work collaboratively and transparently for sustainable water management. in a watershed context. In the development of the AWS standard, international organizations such as the CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) and the CEO Water Mandate of the United Nations Global Compact participate as founding members.
This is Samsung Electronics’ second global certification for sustainable water management. After meeting the highest Carbon Trust standard by reducing water consumption, Samsung has achieved AWS certification for its water resources management system.
“With the AWS Platinum level certification of its semiconductor plant in Korea, Samsung joins a growing number of microelectronics companies taking credible and verifiable corporate action on the water.” said Adrian Sym, CEO, Alliance for Water Stewardship. “As the fourth site in Korea to achieve AWS Certification and the first in the country to achieve Platinum status, they are one of the first to adopt the AWS standard in Korea and join 250 AWS Certified sites worldwide.”
“AWS Certification reflects Samsung’s ongoing and ongoing efforts to manage water resources, such as communication and cooperation with a wide range of stakeholders,” said Dooguen Song, Executive Vice President of Environment, Health, and safety (EHS) at Samsung Electronics. “We will continue to take the lead in managing water resources in closer cooperation with government, local communities and industry players.”
The AWS 2.0 standard is evaluated based on a total of 100 indicators, including stable water management, water pollutant management, water hygiene, household impact of biodiversity and the establishment of governance. There are three levels of AWS Standard certifications: Core, Gold, and Platinum; the higher the number of points earned, the higher the level of water management performance and AWS certification.
To celebrate World Water Day 2023, Samsung Electronics also unveiled a special ESG animated video via the Samsung Semiconductor Newsroom YouTube channel. The video depicts a revitalized Osan Stream, restored by a rich amount of clean water discharged from Samsung’s semiconductor site, allowing the return of otters and an improved biological ecosystem.
