Samsung Electronics today introduced its latest 200 megapixel (MP) image sensor, the ISOCELL HP2, with enhanced pixel technology and full capability for stunning moving images in tomorrow’s high-end smartphones.

The ISOCELL HP2 packs 200 million 0.6 micrometer (μm) pixels in a 1/1.3″ optical format, a sensor size widely used in leading 108 MP smartphone cameras. This allows consumers to enjoy even higher resolutions in the latest high-end smartphones without more camera bumps in their devices.

Using Samsung’s advanced pixel clustering technology, Tetra2pixel, the HP2 adds more versatility to the camera as it simulates different pixel sizes to accommodate different light levels. In low-light environments, the sensor transforms into a 1.2μm 50MP or 2.4μm 12.5MP image sensor by linking four to 16 neighboring pixels. For fuller 8K video, at approximately 33MP, the HP2 switches to 1.2μm 50MP mode to minimize cropping and capture more of the scene. Shooting in 8K at 30 frames per second (fps), a wide field of view as well as a larger pixel size can produce crisp cinematic videos.

Washed-out images from brightly lit environments can be significantly reduced with the HP2, thanks to Samsung’s new Dual Vertical Transfer Gate (D-VTG) technology. In a photodiode inside each pixel, a voltage transfer gate is placed at the bottom to transport electrons from the pixels to the logic layer. With high precision, D-VTG adds a second transfer gate in the pixel, increasing the pixel’s full-well capability by more than 33%. With more stored electrons and efficient signal transfers, this method can reduce overexposure and improve color reproduction, especially in bright light conditions.

In low-light environments, the HP2’s autofocus is taken to the next level with Super QPD, which allows the sensor to use all of its 200 million pixels for focusing agents. The large amount of focus agents are grouped by four adjacent pixels to recognize horizontal and vertical pattern changes that deliver faster and more accurate autofocus. Utilizing the rich pattern data as well as the large number of reference points, the new sensor is capable of fast autofocus even in low light environment.

For superb HDR performance, Samsung introduces for the first time the DSG function in 50MP mode which applies two separate conversion values ​​to the received analog signal at the pixel level. Additionally, Smart-ISO Pro, an HDR solution that merges different ISO reading levels from a single exposure, enables the camera to shoot 12.5MP stills and 4K video at 60fps in HDR.

The Samsung ISOCELL HP2 has entered mass production.
