Samsung Galaxy Z Fold tab release date, price and spec rumors

Samsung is doing great with its line of foldable smartphones, but it might not be long before we see another innovation. Rumors are accelerating that the Korean company may be working on a foldable tablet, possibly dubbed Galaxy Z Fold Tab.

Here’s all the latest news and leaks surrounding this potentially game-changing product, which could finally see Apple’s iPad face a serious challenge.

What is the release date of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Tab?

There is no confirmed release date for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Tab as the company has yet to announce that the product is a reality. We’ve seen rumors pointing to the first quarter of 2022, with GizChina being one of the first to track that date, but that clearly didn’t happen.

It hasn’t been announced in 2022 at all, and there’s no firm sign that it’s coming soon either, but the leaker Yogesh Brar reported that Samsung is working on a “tri-fold” and that it “could finally ship this year”.

If so, our best guess is that we’ll see Samsung move forward with its foldable products and introduce the Z Fold Tab alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5, which are slated to arrive in August.

How much will the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Tab cost?

It’s also a headache at the moment, because we haven’t seen a foldable tablet from Samsung yet. As an indication, here is the price of Galaxy Z Fold smartphones:

The trend is for a steady but slow reduction in cost as production gets refined, but due to the nature of foldable devices, they’re going to remain expensive for some time to come. As tablets have even bigger screens, we expect the Fold Tab to cost at least as much as the Z Fold 4, and almost certainly a bit more.

What features will we see in the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Tab?

There have been major leaks and rumors regarding the potential design of the new tablet. While there’s almost nothing known about what specs the new device might pack, the build itself is the most interesting part. LetsGoDigital did a great job of finding patent applications from Samsung that describe the construction of the device and used them (together with designer Sarang Sheth) to create renders that show what it might look like.

The main defining feature is that there could be two foldable parts of the screen, allowing Samsung to not only create a tablet that’s truly pocket-sized, but can essentially be used as a smartphone when folded.

The two folds are located on either side of the main third area of ​​the panel, so the other two thirds fold outward and wrap around the back of the device. There is a small gap between the two folded areas, where the Samsung S Pen is stored. It also reveals a triple camera array, which suggests the device could be more of a smartphone than a tablet.

If the design is the one that will feature on the Galaxy Z Fold Tab, it will look damn amazing, while creating a near impossible task for case makers. Of course, this could be a variant of the Galaxy Z Fold smartphone that hasn’t launched yet, so we’ll have to wait and see.

Another possibility is that Samsung is using a different approach, as LetsGoDigital who found the patent application further pointed out.

It’s a simpler design that uses a single fold in the center, just like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold phones, but with a larger screen and a wedge-shaped frame that thickens around the hinges. In the patent, there were no cameras on the screen or on the back, so it could be that they were deemed superfluous or added later in production. The aesthetic is simple, sleek, and would likely be cheaper than the double-ply version described above.

Samsung has already showcased a number of foldable displays at the Society for Information Display (SID) expo in May 2021. GSMArena reported on it, with images of several models, including one with two folds, as seen in the LetsGoDigital renders above. On this version, the OLED screen can grow to full 7.2-inch dimensions when open, and it’s closer to the 4:3 aspect ratio of an iPad than the square Galaxy Z Folds.

The company showed off even more concept designs at CES 2022, including the Flex S and Flex G, two variants on devices with multiple bending points. The ‘S’ folds in a zig-zag shape as it closes, while the two sides of the G fold over each other, in what looks like a more refined version of the double-fold design seen in the above patent.

Between all of these designs, it looks like Samsung has the bit between its teeth at the moment. That could mean we may see more tablets appear over the next year as the Korean giants continue to redefine what you can do with electronics and smart glass.
