
Samsung Galaxy S24 will use stacked battery technology borrowed from electric vehicles
The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is about ten months away now, which means that development of the components that will go inside should be nearly complete to allow enough time for testing and manufacturing. And according to South Korea’s latest report, the helm’s next flagship could bring new battery technology, borrowed from the electric vehicle industry.
korean post The elect claims that Samsung’s SDI division, which is in charge of battery R&D, is looking to transfer stacked batteries to the smartphone sector. Rather than a change in the chemical content of the battery, this refers to the way the cells are arranged, but the effect is still higher energy density, allowing more capacity to fit in the same volume . Audi’s Q8 e-tron has used similar technology to fit a 114kWh battery inside, while Chinese battery maker CATL has an even larger stacked 140kWh battery.
Obviously, smartphone batteries operate in a very different environment than EV power packs, but the report claims we should expect a 10% improvement in density. This does not necessarily mean that the Galaxy S24 Ultra will pack a 5,500 mAh battery compared to the 5,000 mAh of the Galaxy S23 Ultra. Samsung could well use the upgraded pack to fit the same capacity into a smaller cell, freeing up space for other components or allowing for a more compact phone.
Assembled batteries are usually one of the first components to leak as a smartphone progresses through its development phases, we’ll likely hear more about that soon.
