Samsung Electronics Completes Product Carbon Footprint Life Cycle Assessment Verification for Semiconductors – Samsung Global Newsroom
The environmental impact of chips manufactured at Samsung’s global sites will be shared to accelerate the carbon neutrality goals of its B2B customers
Samsung Electronics, a global leader in advanced semiconductor technology, today announced that it has established a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) on the carbon footprint of products in its semiconductor business and obtained verification of DNV, one of the world’s leading independent certification bodies.
LCA is a methodology for assessing the environmental impacts throughout the life cycle of commercial products, processes or services, by quantifying the amount of energy, materials and waste released. In detail on the carbon footprint of its semiconductors, Samsung’s LCA covers raw material extraction to chip manufacturing, assembly and testing. Its results comply with ISO 14040, ISO 14044 and ISO 14067 standards to ensure credibility and transparency.
The carbon footprint is commonly used by Samsung and its customers to recognize the environmental impact in all phases of Samsung’s semiconductor products and can be used as a metric to track and reduce carbon emissions.
“Since 2019, we have been actively mobilizing our efforts to measure and reduce the carbon emissions of our logic and key memory solutions,” said Dooguen Song, Executive Vice President of Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Center at Samsung Electronics. “By leveraging LCA, we can help our customers achieve carbon neutrality, while becoming more transparent about the environmental impact of the semiconductors we produce around the world.”

Since 2019, 37 of Samsung’s semiconductor products have received carbon footprint accreditation from Carbon Trust and UL, 6 of its memory products certified for carbon reduction from Carbon Trust. Samsung’s eco-friendly product portfolio includes DRAM, SSD, embedded storage, mobile SoC, mobile image sensor, automotive LED packages.
Building on its LCA established late last year, Samsung will quantify the carbon footprint of chips manufactured at all of its global manufacturing, testing and assembly sites in Korea, China and the United States. .
With sustainability at its core, Samsung will expand its LCA to include water and resource footprints to provide a more comprehensive assessment that will ultimately reduce the environmental impact of various applications such as mobiles and wearables, data centers, consumer electronics, automotive, communications and more. .
