Sadio Mane left to console Mo Salah as Chelsea & Liverpool stars prove decisive in Senegal’s AFCON triumph

A pair of Premier League stars came up trumps on Sunday evening, to guide Senegal beyond Egypt, and to African Cup of Nations glory.

A brilliant month’s worth of goals, drama and pulsating action at Africa’s biggest international competition, of course, came to a head a short time ago.

The aforementioned Senegal, tournament favourites, faced off against an underdog Egypt outfit, who, remarkably, had carved out their path to the tournament showpiece whilst racking up a paltry total of four goals.

And, with 120 minutes played in Cameroon this evening, such a total remained intact, with the Pharaohs still in with a 50/50 shot of AFCON glory.

This came after a hard-fought 90 minutes of normal time failed to produce a decisive goal, before a further half hour of action did likewise.

Proceedings in Yaounde, in turn, were left to be decided from twelve yards.

And, after Chelsea’s Edouard Mendy came up clutch in keeping out Egypt’s 4th spot-kick courtesy of Mohanad Lasheen, the hopes of a nation were placed on the broad shoulders of Sadio Mane.

Having fluffed his line from the penalty spot early in the action at The Olembe Stadium, Liverpool’s gifted wide-man, this time round, made no mistake, rifling a brilliant effort into the bottom corner, and securing a first-ever African Cup of Nations title for Senegal in the process:

Amid the chaotic celebrations set in motion by his spot-kick rippling the net, though, Mane was quick to ensure that a fellow Liverpool star – in the form of attacking partner in crime Mohamed Salah – was managing okay.

This comes after the latter was not even afforded the opportunity to step forth and test his luck from twelve yards, having been positioned fifth and last in Egypt’s penalty taker order.

Mane, in turn, quickly sought out Salah post-match, to console his fellow Reds wide-man, ahead of joining back up with Jurgen Klopp’s squad on Merseyside at some point over the coming week:
