Ronaldo returns

In a deal confirmed just days ahead of the end of the transfer window, it was announced that Cristiano Ronaldo would be returning for a second spell at Manchester United, 12 years after his last stint at Old Trafford.

CR7 netted 118 times in 292 appearances for the Red Devils during his last spell in England, and will be looking to significantly add to that over the two years that he is contracted to the club for.

In the meantime, his signing has proved a huge success for the Manchester United brand, with “Ronaldo 7” shirt sales reaching 188 million pounds, which paid for the transfer fee alone.

Can Ronaldo, so often the hero for his club, bring success to Manchester after four long years without a trophy?

Ronaldo handed his first start

Ahead of the game, all United fans were understandably desperate to see their idol debut in front of the Old Trafford faithful this afternoon against Newcastle United, who have picked up just the solitary point from their opening three games.

United, by contrast, have picked up seven points from their first three fixtures, with a 1-1 draw to Southampton the only blemish on their record so far. With Ronaldo added, they could continue their strong start and make a title push this season.

Fortunately for those travelling to Old Trafford for the 3pm fixture, Ronaldo was indeed handed his first start under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, leading the line in the absence of Edinson Cavani, who was left out of the matchday squad.

It would complete the fairytale for the reds were the Portuguese forward to net on his return to the club, and it would certainly mark the end of a surreal two weeks for the United faithful.

Will he open his account against Newcastle?
