Revealed: Romelu Lukaku’s status for Chelsea’s season opener vs Crystal Palace
An insight into the potential participation of incoming signing Romelu Lukaku in Chelsea’s meeting with Crystal Palace this weekend has been forthcoming on Thursday afternoon.
Big Rom eyed
The headlines at Stamford Bridge over the last week have of course been dominated by fresh links to hitman Lukaku.
On the back of a campaign which saw midfielder Jorginho finish as the club’s top-scorer, Thomas Tuchel has understandably made clear his desire for reinforcements up top.
Borussia Dortmund standout Erling Haaland was initially viewed as the first-choice target on the part of the Blues, but Jadon Sancho’s Manchester United switch soon made it altogether unlikely that the board at Signal Iduna Park would be willing to come to the table.
Chelsea, in turn, were forced to turn their attentions elsewhere, culminating in fresh interest in the aforementioned Lukaku.
Belgian hitman Lukaku of course previously lined out for the Pensioners, during the early years of his fledgling career.
Having since gone on to establish himself as one of world football’s most prolific strikers across a two-year stint with Inter Milan, though, those in a position of power in West London have evidently come to the conclusion that the 28-year-old is now ready to lead the line at Stamford Bridge.
Word, in turn, was forthcoming late last week that Chelsea had struck a club record €115 million deal to bring ‘Big Rom’ back to the Premier League:
🚨 Chelsea have agreed a deal with Inter Milan to sign Romelu Lukaku. 28yo Belgian striker expected to sign 5yr contract worth ~€12-13m per year. Will return to Stamford Bridge 8yrs after leaving for Everton. With @SJohnsonSport @TheAthleticUK #CFC #Inter https://t.co/ag52OXbZEC

Lukaku has since made his way to London, with the soon-to-be ex-Inter star having flown into Biggin Hill airport on Wednesday evening, ahead of putting pen to paper on a deal with Chelsea.
Such swift developments, in turn, had inevitably resulted in murmurs spreading online that the hitman could therefore be involved when Thomas Tuchel’s men get their domestic campaign underway this weekend.
After getting the better of Villarreal en route to European Super Cup glory last night, the Blues will now turn their attentions towards a Premier League showdown with capital rivals Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon.
If the latest word stemming from the media is to be believed, however, then Tuchel will not be able to call on Lukaku versus the Eagles.
As revealed by the reliable David Ornstein, despite the transfer continuing to develop smoothly, the Belgian will not be available for selection this weekend.
Instead, Lukaku looks primed to mark his 2nd Chelsea debut in another derby clash, versus Arsenal on August 22nd.
🚨 Romelu Lukaku not available for Chelsea in Saturday’s Premier League opener vs Crystal Palace. No issues with transfer (€115m, 5yr contract) so all being well the 28yo striker will feature at Arsenal on 22 Aug. With @liam_twomey for @TheAthleticUK #CFC https://t.co/D9aLCJ0BwY
