Revealed: How many games Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has to save his Manchester United job

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on the ropes

If Sunday’s clash with Liverpool had been a boxing match, the referee would have called it off at half time.

By that point, Jurgen Klopp’s side had put four goals past a hapless and hopeless Manchester United side, in front of a stunned Old Trafford crowd.

But, it was not a boxing match, and so the torture continued for the Red Devils. Mohamed Salah completed his hat-trick and made it five in the process, before Paul Pogba saw red for an awful challenge on Naby Keita, who had to be stretchered off the pitch.

Liverpool took their foot off the throat of the opposition for the final half-hour, which in many ways was even more disrespectful than scoring more would have been. They knew Manchester United weren’t a threat.

While Solskjaer was bullish in his post-match interview, it has since emerged that his job was on the line as a consequence of the humiliation.

A three-game lifeline handed to the Red Devil boss

It appears, for now at least, that the executioner’s blade has been averted, with reports suggesting that he will be in charge for the clash with Tottenham on Saturday.

However, Jason Burt, of The Telegraph, has revealed that the Norwegian has three games to save his job. After Tottenham, Manchester United travel to Bergamo for a return tie against Atalanta, before they face their “noisy neighbours” Manchester City the following weekend.

The Manchester United hierarchy have allegedly “given no guarantees” that Ole will remain at the wheel after the Tottenham clash, but should results across the three games not improve, they see the international break which follows as the perfect time for change.

Meanwhile, Antonio Conte has been linked with the role, while Zinedine Zidane has ruled himself out of the running.
