Remaining Super League trio to revive project imminently, with one major change

The failed European Super League project looks set to be reignited over the coming weeks, according to widespread reports on Friday evening.

The chief architects behind the fresh push? Spanish heavyweights Real Madrid and Barcelona, and Italian equivalents Juventus.

All three have of course remained in full support of the initiative, despite the widespread backlash surrounding its planned implementation, and ensuing collapse in April of last year.

And now, as per a report from the reliable Sam Wallace of the Telegraph, Barca, Real and Juve are ready to kickstart efforts to revive the project as a whole.

It is understood that, potentially as early as next week, a new proposal will be unveiled, featuring one major change which could well prove telling in swaying those on the fence towards backing the initiative.

The alteration in question comes in the form of scrapping permanent membership for European football’s elite.

Instead, clubs from across the continent will be afforded the chance to qualify for the competition, via success on the domestic front year on year.

Barca march on

Despite their continuous efforts to form a breakaway tournament away from the constraints of European football’s governing body, all three of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus of course remain in the thick of respective UEFA campaigns at present.

Real and Juve both have work to do on the back of their Champions League Last-16 first-leg outings, with the former having fallen to a 1-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, and Max Allegri’s Bianconeri pegged back to a 1-1 stalemate at Villarreal.

Barcelona, on the other hand, had no such problems in dispatching of Serie A giants Napoli, to book their spot in the Last-16 of the Europa League on Thursday night.
