Release date of Mission Majnu: The Sidharth Malhotra-directed historical spy thriller premieres January 20 on Netflix

Mission Majnu, the upcoming spy thriller directed by Sidharth Malhotra, just got a release date. Netflix is ​​ready to ring in the new year with its first Indian Original on January 20, transporting you back in time to experience a “thrilling secret mission.” Rashmika Mandanna (Sita Ramam) stars in a film that explores the events that “transformed politics between India and its neighboring country in the 1970s”. Shantanu Bagchi marks his directorial debut, conceiving Mission Majnu from a screenplay co-written by a team of three – Parveez Shaikh (freddy), Sumit Batheja (Bhoot Police) and Aseem Arrora (Malang).

The studio also released a poster for Mission Majnu, which sees Malhotra as a RAW agent, making his streaming debut with Netflix. For Mandanna, it would be her first Bollywood project, which contains “courage, heart, drama and haunting music”. The film, based on real events, also stars Kumud Mishra (Jogi), Parmeet Sethi (Roustom), Sharib Hashmi (Dhaakad), Mir Sarwar (Bajrangi Bhaijaan) and Zakir Hussain. Mission Majnu is produced by Ronnie Screwvala (Swades), under his RSVP Movies banner.

“Mission Majnu is the story of India’s growing prowess and its place in nations’ global standing as a superpower, both as the fastest growing nation in the world and as the largest democracy – and stories like these show how we’ve laid the cornerstone of our position. It’s a story that best suits Netflix audiences with its global reach,” Screwvala said in a prepared statement. “Sidharth Malhotra and Rashmika Mandana bring this story to life and RSVP is truly proud to present it.” Filming for Mission Majnu began in February last year, with plans for a June 10 theatrical release.

Another Indian movie from Netflix that recently got a release date is Ariyippu, directed by Kunnchako Boban, which will be released on December 16 on the platform. The drama made the rounds of the international film festival circuit in August and was later acquired by Netflix, making it a streaming exclusive. Starring Divya Prabha, the Mahesh Narayanan-directed film follows a struggling couple, whose dreams of leaving the country for a better life are stymied, when a threatening old video surfaces.

Mission Majnu was released on January 20, 2023 on Netflix.
