Record-breaking scoreline incoming? Belenenses take on Benfica with just 9 players, including 2 goalkeepers
A frankly ridiculous story, stemming from the Portuguese top-flight, has piqued attentions across the continent on Saturday evening.
Title challengers up against relegation candidates
The story in question surrounds the Primeira Liga clash between Belenenses, commonly referred to as B–SAD, and heavyweights Benfica.
The two sides, as things stand, are locked in action at the former’s Jamor National Sports Center ground.
Benfica, just days on from securing a hard-fought share of the spoils in a Champions League group stage showdown with Barcelona, were no doubt hopeful of a more comfortable evening’s work this time round, amid a three-way battle for the Portuguese title.
Few at the club, however, could have predicted just how straightforward the clash was set to be made in the build-up to kick-off…
This comes with a major outbreak of Covid-19 at Belenenses earlier today having seen a full 14 members of the club’s squad test positive for the virus.
The severity of the situation left almost all of the hosts’ key performers unable to take to the pitch, culminating in one of the most bizarre situations likely to be seen across Europe all season.
As showcased in the graphic below, Belenenses were forced to take to the pitch against Benfica with just nine players, two of whom came in the form of goalkeepers.

In turn, it did not come as a huge surprise when the visitors took just 24 seconds to open the evening’s scoring, before doubling their advantage a short time later.
A long, and potentially record-breaking night in store for those of a Belenenses persuasion…
