Recent reports have linked Chelsea with current Atalanta star, Merih Demiral.
Merih Demiral joins Atalanta
Merih Demiral made the switch to Juventus in the summer of 2019.
The Italian giants are believed to have paid around £16m for the centre-back’s services.
And given how impressive the no-nonsense defender had been prior to his Juve switch, the Serie A powerhouse looked to have bagged themselves a real up-and-coming star for a fairly low fee.
But since leaving Sassuolo for Juve, Demiral had found his game-time fairly limited in Turin.
As a result, it was not at all surprising to see Juventus loan out Demiral to Atalanta, who were in need of a new centre-back as Cristian Romero was leaving for Tottenham in the 2021 summer transfer window.
Demiral linked with Real Madrid & Chelsea
Though it is a loan for now, Atalanta are understood to have the option to buy the centre-back in the summer.
That option to buy is believed to be €25m plus bonuses.
And, though he has fitted seamlessly into Atalanta’s backline, it appears they could be set to cash in on the Turkish star as soon as they buy him, much like they did with Romero who also came from Juventus.
According to Goal citing Fanatik, Real Madrid and Chelsea are set to battle it out for Demiral.
No potential fee is mentioned in the report, but given Atalanta already have to stump up €25m to sign Demiral, one would assume the fee they charge to any potential suitor would be higher.
With Chelsea currently set to lose three central defenders for free in the summer, could they bring in Demiral as a potential replacement for at least one of the stars in question?
