Rafa Benitez’s stance on James Rodriguez’s Everton future revealed

James Rodriguez’s Everton stint

James Rodriguez joined Everton in September of 2020 from Real Madrid.

The signing at the time was viewed as something of a coup for the Toffees, who were no doubt excited to have the Colombian once again honing his craft under decorated boss, Carlo Ancelotti.

And Rodriguez had a solid start to his Everton career, notching five goals and seven assists in his first 18 games:

Rodriguez can leave

However, Rodriguez did dip off somewhat in the second half of 2020/21, in part due to fitness issues.

And following Carlo Ancelotti leaving for Real Madrid and Rafa Benitez taking over, Rodriguez’s future at Goodison Park has been called into question.

It was claimed that Everton could sell six senior players as Benitez rebuilds and Rodriguez was named as one player who could indeed be moved on.

And Rodriguez has recently come out and compared his situation to Sergio Aguero’s at Barcelona, in that he basically moved to Everton to be with Carlo Ancelotti and now he has gone.

Now, a fresh update on Rodriguez’s situation at Everton has emerged and it does not look great for the Colombian.

As per the Daily Mail:

The 30-year-old winger has been informed by new manager Rafa Benitez that he doesn’t feature in plans for the season ahead and is free to leave should the right offer come in.

It is added that both AC Milan and FC Porto are interested. But his new club would need to cover his wages, which are believed to be £220,00-a-week, or persuade him to take a pay cut.

Despite these reports though, it is worth noting that Rodriguez did start in Everton’s pre-season loss to Manchester United over the weekend. Though this may have had something to do with Richarlison still being away at the Olympics and Dominic Calvert-Lewin missing out through injury.
