Rafa Benitez provides Dominic Calvert-Lewin update ahead of Everton vs Burnley

Everton vs Burnley

This gameweek’s Premier League action is set to draw to a close on Monday evening.

The final clash of the week will see Everton play host to Burnley on Monday in an 8 pm kick-off at Goodison Park.

Everton have, so far, enjoyed a solid start to life under former Liverpool boss, Rafa Benitez.

The Spaniard has guided the Toffees to seven points from a possible nine in the Premier League in 2021/22, with a draw vs Leeds United sandwiched between victories over Southampton and Brighton.

The Merseysiders would also see off Huddersfield to progress to the 3rd round of the League Cup.

As for Burnley, they are yet to pick up a single league win prior to Monday’s game.

The Clarets lost to Brighton and Liverpool before drawing with Leeds United in week three of the PL campaign.

The latest on Calvert-Lewin ahead of Burnley

Prior to Monday evening’s game, Rafa Benitez held his pre-Burnley press conference on Friday.

In said presser, the Spaniard spoke about Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The striker was understood to have picked up a toe issue in pre-season, which caused him to miss a friendly vs Manchester United.

It was then confirmed at the end of August that DCL had withdrawn from the latest England squad to recover from a broken toe.

As result, Everton and Fantasy Premier League managers were no doubt desperate for some good news from Rafa on Friday.

But when speaking on Friday, Benitez did not actually confirm that Calvert-Lewin would be starting vs Burnley.

He did, however, state that the striker has been training with pain and that he is happy to see him trying in the training sessions:

“He has been training with pain.  I am really happy to see him trying in the training sessions, even when not fully fit.  That is why I am expecting more.”

Benitez also had this to say on Everton’s injury situation on Friday:

“The majority of the players are fine. We have two or three issues but Yerry Mina is training and Ben Godfrey is [too]. Seamus, I think, will be available. Delph still has a problem with his shoulder.”
