Rafa Benitez makes Everton transfer admission

An insight into why Everton have spent so little in the transfer market this summer has been provided.

Everton’s 2021 summer transfer window

Everton have, so far, signed three players in the market this summer.

The Toffees secured the services of Asmir Begovic on a free transfer, presumably to replace Robin Olsen, who returned to AS Roma after his loan expired last seaosn.

Elsewhere, Benitez brought in Andros Townsend on another free transfer following the 30-year-old’s contract expiring at Crystal Palace.

And finally, the only transfer fee currently spent by Everton saw them pay around £1.8m to Bayer Leverkusen for Demarai Gray.

Everton need to sell players

Said transfers, whilst they could prove useful, do seem fairly underwhelming given Everton’s recent spending.

Last summer, for example, the Merseysiders spent upwards of £60m on Ben Godfrey, Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure.

However, as mentioned above, some insight into why Everton have spent so little this summer has now been provided.

As per The Guardian, Everton posted combined losses of almost £265m in the three years up to 2019/20, which is a breach of the Premier League’s rules.

And now, Benitez has admitted that, in the current circumstances, Everton have to move players on:

“The reality is that we know the financial fair play rules are there and we have to follow them,” Benítez said.

“I know what is the situation and we will try to do our best with the players we have. If we can strengthen our squad we will try to do it. In these circumstances we have to move players on – that is simple to understand.”
