Quentin Tarantino’s Supposed Final Film Will Be Titled ‘The Movie Critic’

Quentin Tarantino’s latest rumored movie is said to be called ‘The Movie Critic’. According to a report, the acclaimed filmmaker plans to direct the film this fall, which will likely be set in late 1970s Los Angeles and will star a woman. For now, we can just assume who The Movie Critic will be based on, given that the director is known for basing his characters on existing material. The report believes the film may depict the story of Pauline Kael, the famous American film critic, who briefly worked at Paramount Pictures as a consultant in the late 1970s. The timeline matches the reported setting of the script.

The Hollywood Reporter’s report claims that The Movie Critic does not currently have a production studio and will be presented to buyers “as early as this week”. Tarantino has shown his admiration for critic Kael before, saying she had a huge influence on him – even publishing a book of essays called ‘Cinema Speculation’, based on his works.

The filmmaker has also previously expressed his thoughts on his retirement, saying directors lose touch with age. “I want to stop at a certain point. Directors don’t get better with age. Usually, the worst films in their filmography are the last four at the end. I’m all about my filmography, and a bad movie f*I have three good ones,” he said in a 2012 interview (via Entertainment Weekly). “I don’t want this bad disconnected comedy in my filmography, the movie that makes people think, ‘Oh man, he still thinks that was 20 years ago.’ When directors become obsolete, it’s not pretty.

Tarantino previously worked with Sony Pictures for the Oscar-nominated Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which THR says could also be a strong contender to produce The Movie Critic. The film won two Academy Awards – Best Supporting Actor (Brad Pitt) and Best Production Design – after which the author released a fictionalized version of the same, marking his authorial debut. An audiobook for the same was also released in 2021, which was narrated by Jennifer Jason Leigh, who previously collaborated with the filmmaker on The Hateful Eight.

The Movie Critic will be Tarantino’s tenth and likely last film to make — if you combine the two Kill Bill volumes into one mega-movie — as he tries to escape the curse of the “last horrible movie” (via MovieMaker ). Late last year, the filmmaker also revealed plans to shoot an eight-episode limited series in 2023, which would be with Netflix. He has television work experience – directing two episodes of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation in 2005. The Season 5 finale “Grave Danger” earned him an Outstanding Director nomination at the 57th Emmy Awards.
