Qualcomm Unveils Wi-Fi 7 Platform with Multi-Tie Mesh: Everything You Need to Know
Qualcomm on Tuesday unveiled its Wi-Fi 7 immersive home platform designed and optimized to meet home mesh Wi-Fi networking systems. The platform includes two new processors that use the 5 GHz and 6 GHz frequency bands while supporting the 240 MHz and 320 MHz channels, respectively. These specifications translate to the spectrum used by Wi-Fi 7 enabled devices. Qualcomm Wi-Fi 7 systems can deliver speeds of up to 5.8 Gbps, the company claims. The technology is combined with a Multi-Link Mesh function which will allow dynamic switching between spectra and available channels.
According to an official Qualcomm blog post announcing Qualcomm’s Wi-Fi 7 Immersive Home Platforms, the technology is based on a modular chipset architecture that delivers over 20 GB/s of total system capacity.
The company says the processor technology was designed to enable collaboration, telepresence, augmented reality/virtual reality and immersive gaming for “homes of today and tomorrow”. The technology is currently being sampled while commercial sales are expected to begin in the second half of 2023.
“We developed the Qualcomm Immersive Home Platform to enable high-performance connectivity in a low-cost, low-profile form factor that delivers the latest home networking innovations,” said Nick Kucharewski, senior vice president and general manager, Infrastructure and wireless network at QualcommTechnologies.
Qualcomm’s immersive home Wi-Fi 7 platform features a proprietary multi-link mesh system that selects, aggregates or alternates links in the unlicensed 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz spectrum bands based on conditions network, device capabilities, and home network topology. The company claims the platform can provide a 75% reduction in real-time latency in congested environments compared to Wi-Fi 6.
The system leverages Wi-Fi 7 technology that spans the 5GHz spectrum, with 240MHz channels and 4K QAM modulation, which the company claims helps deliver 80% more capacity than the Wi-Fi 6. As mentioned earlier, the platform is claimed to deliver 5.8GB/s of peak speed to a single connected device.
