Qatar 2022: Argentina Face Mexico In Must Win Encounter

The Albiceleste of Argentina take on Mexico in a make or mar game in Group C of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Argentina, one of the favourites to win this year’s World Cup, suffered a shock 2-1 to unfancied Saudi Arabia in their first game of the competition.

Despite taking the lead thanks to Lionel Messi’s well converted penalty, two second half goals in quick succession by Salah Al-Sheshri and Salem Aldawsari turned the game around.

This proved to be the biggest upset of the Qatar 2022 World Cup so far and one of the biggest upsets in the competition history.

The two-time World Cup champions put on a favourable display in the first half scoring four goals, though three of the goals were ruled out for offside with the new semi automated offside technology on display.

Argentina had 70% of the possession, took 15 shots in comparison to three by the Asian nation, but the highline formation orchestrated by African coaching legend Harver Renard was probably the difference between the two sides.

Mexico on the other hand need a win against Argentina after failing to defeat Robert Lewandowski’s Poland. The Mexicans put on a rather tame display against the Poles in their first game that ended in a goalless draw.

Argentina are obviously favourites to win the game against Mexico who will be looking to spring another upset on the Albi Celeste who may be lacking in confidence after losing their opener.

However, Argentina have a good record against Mexico, securing 16 wins with 14 ending in draws with just four defeats.

And speaking ahead of the encounter, Mexico coach Tata Martino spoke about his compatriot Messi, who was his player at Barcelona.

“The best footballer in the last 15 years, at least. Stopping him, it happens more often because he’s having a bad afternoon than what we do.”

And according to Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni: “We watched the game back (against Saudi Arabia) but now we are thinking of Mexico which will be entirely different.

“But the way we play will be similar, we won’t change our style due to what happened on Tuesday, that’s clear. Mexico are an excellent team, an offensive team with a great coach. But we have a style that is non-negotiable.”
