Project Drone Galaxy, the upcoming Drone Racing League (DRL) metaverse game has received a new trailer. The DRL has partnered with the Algorand blockchain to launch a game in the metaverse, which will allow players to build their own drones and compete in high-stakes racing arenas, all within a fully functional virtual universe. Founded in 2015 by Nicholas Horbaczewski, the DRL is a real world competition held annually, where professional pilots race identically customized drones for awards and accolades.

The league has released an official trailer with previews of the multiplayer game, which will go live later this year. DRL has yet to announce a release date for Project Drone Galaxy. Algorand, a green blockchain was chosen to support the game, created by Playground Labs, a metaverse infrastructure developer.

“Our fans are avid drone and blockchain enthusiasts, and as we prepare to launch Project Drone Galaxy powered by Algorand this year. The Drone Racing League is made for Web3,” Gianutsos said in a prepared statement.

DRL Marketing Director Annie Marie Gianutsos, when announcing the Drone Galaxy project, said the league was essentially “designed for Web3”.

“Players will build their own drones, compete for digital collectibles, and fly to win as animal avatars fighting fiercely competitive barriers, boosts, and pilots. The DRL is creating a new era of sports that brings high-speed competition to real life, virtual simulation, and the metaverse,” said the DRL.

The game will be accessible on various platforms, including PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, and Epic Games.

The games will also be streamed live on a bunch of social platforms like YouTube and Facebook.

The metaverse, a virtual work ecosystem, allows people to exist as avatars in a digital reality. They can meet, work, buy digital collectibles, engage with them, and indulge in hyper-realistic virtual experiences in the metaverse.

The market opportunity for the metaverse could reach $800 billion (about Rs. 59,58,700 crore) in the next two years, according to estimates from research reports.

The technology is being touted as the next big thing for the gaming industry, which in itself is a profit-generating mammoth.

As for Algorand, this marks another important partnership after Italian and Indian government authorities partnered with the blockchain for official projects.

“Video game segment revenue is expected to reach $221.40 billion in 2023. The number of users is expected to reach 2,776.9 million users by 2027. User penetration is expected to reach 34.9% d ‘by 2027,’ says Statista.
