Electric vehicle batteries are the next point of tension between China and the United States

Over the past decades, China has established itself as a global leader in the electric vehicle industry. Its control of refined battery cell materials and advanced battery manufacturing technologies is so comprehensive that Western automakers that want to do away with gas-powered cars won’t be able to do so without turning to China-made batteries.

As a result, battery technology is becoming increasingly politicized in the United States and China. Ford’s recent announcement that it was building a battery plant in Michigan with Chinese battery giant CATL has not been without controversy, and the deal could still be derailed, proving that the advantage of the China in battery technology will only become more relevant in our daily lives in the future.
