Portugal game offers insight into Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo’s new Manchester United dynamic

Ronaldo rejoins Manchester United

It was announced yesterday that Cristiano Ronaldo had officially rejoined Manchester United from Juventus.

Seemingly at one point thought to be joining arch-rivals Manchester City, United pulled out all of the stops to make the deal happen, and for the Portuguese forward to return to Old Trafford.

Manchester United revealed in their announcement that Ronaldo has signed a two-year deal, with the option for a further year, meaning that he could play for the Red Devils until 39 years old should he see out his deal.

As for the fee, it has reportedly set Manchester United back 15 million euros, with an additional 8 million euros in add ons, taking the potential deal to 23 million euros.

Portuguese penalty duties

Despite not having played together at club level yet, insight may have been provided into the upcoming relationship between Ronaldo and fellow Portuguese Bruno Fernandes when they do come to play together.

This comes in the form of penalty duties. The pair started the World Cup qualifier against the Republic of Ireland together in a strong Portugal side that also included Joao Cancelo and Diogo Jota.

And just nine minutes into the encounter, the home side were awarded a spot kick when Bruno Fernandes was judged to have been upended by John Egan. Fernandes, penalty taker for Manchester United, wasted no time in passing the ball straight to his new club-mate, who subsequently saw his penalty saved.

Fernandes scored nine penalties last season for the red devils, but with the addition of Ronaldo to Old Trafford, could we see the national roles replicated at club level?
