Popcru wants Saps vetting process improvedThe Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) has called on the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) to ensure that vetting process gets improved.

This statement was made after it welcomed the arrest of Deputy National Police Commissioner for human resources Bonang Mgwenya on Monday.

Mgwenya was arrested on charges of fraud, corruption, money laundering, and theft which originates from a multi-million tender meant for police equipment.

The Joburg magistrates court granted her release on bail of R20,000.

Popcru’s spokesperson Richard Mamabolo said: “It is quite important that within the SAPS we have people with integrity. ”

“The last time we had a commissioner who finished his term was George Fivaz, who was the first national police commissioner in the country.”

“We think part of the challenge is that in the SAPS, there has not been consistency with leadership”.

However, Ipid launched a 24-hour hotline that will enable the public to report criminal activities carried out by police officers
