PlayStation 5 Slim: YouTuber builds one just 2cm thick

Sony has a habit of releasing a slim version of its PlayStation consoles a few years after their first releases. The PlayStation 5, released in 2020, is now a few years old, so it could get a makeover soon. However, it looks like a YouTuber has beaten Sony by creating his own “Slim” PlayStation 5. It reduced the size of the console to a thickness of only 1.9 cm. In comparison, the original PS5 is 10.4cm thick. Of course, there are caveats, the biggest of which relate to cost and power.

YouTuber Mattew Perks of the DIY Perks channel has succeeded in his bid to build the “world’s first PlayStation 5 Slim”. Measuring 39×26×10.4cm in dimensions, the PS5 is Sony’s largest game console to date. So, Perks’ first task was to take this console apart and get rid of any components that could be replaced with something thinner. Unsurprisingly, it had to remove most of its steel shroud and CPU heatsink. He then installed a custom water-piped cooling system, made from copper sheets, the sheet supposedly costing $240 (about 19,000 rupees). The PS5 costs $499 / Rs. 49,990.

Perks’ next challenge was to remove the significant internal power supply to reduce the thickness of the PS5. He then replaced it with an external power supply – an elegant solution, to say the least. The PS4 Slim, the one made by Sony, has an internal power supply. That said, in my opinion, it greatly enhances the aesthetic appeal of the new “Slim” PS5 console. Finally, all the remaining essential parts were pressed into a 3/4 inch thick copper box.

Perks’ first attempt to run the PS5 “Slim” resulted in the console overheating. After a few tweaks when the PS5 ‘Slim’ finally worked, it supposedly offered better thermal performance than the original PS5 console. According to temperature measurements taken by Perks while running Horizon Forbidden West, his “Slim” PS5 reached a CPU temperature of around 65 degrees Celsius, a RAM temperature of 52 degrees Celsius, and a VRM temperature of 44 degrees Celsius. By comparison, the original PS5 would have reached CPU, RAM, and VRM temperatures of 75, 94, and 71 degrees Celsius, respectively.

The original PS5 can be purchased from popular online stores and retail stores during monthly restocks. In fact, one of them happened on Tuesday itself. There’s no word from Sony about an official PS5 Slim. Still.
