Pep Guardiola names all of Manchester City’s title rivals this season

Tottenham vs Man City

Manchester City’s Premier League title defence will begin later today.

The Citizens are set to play out the final fixture of the game week on Sunday afternoon, facing off with Tottenham in a 4:30 PM UK time kick-off.

The Sky Blues head into the game on the back of a 1-0 loss to Leicester City in the Community Shield.

Man City fielded a fairly weak starting eleven for that game, but still managed to make it a tight affair against a close to full strength Leicester side.

Pep Guardiola and co. must now turn their attentions to a new-look Tottenham team with Nuno Espirito Santo at the helm.

Spurs enjoyed a decent pre-season overall, picking up a 1-0 win over Arsenal last weekend, and should prove a stern test for a City side who look set to be without some of their key players on Sunday.

Guardiola names City’s title rivals

Ahead of his side getting their campaign underway, Pep Guardiola has been discussing who Man City’s title rivals are this season.

Man City have accumulated a staggering 365 points over the last four seasons, winning three titles in that time and breaking the league record for most points in a single PL campaign (100 in 2017/18).

Despite this, Guardiola has been fairly generous when naming who the contenders are for the English top-flight this term – higlighting themselves, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham and Leicester:

“When we start the season every team wants to be champion. We were [champions]. We have a trophy in our cabinet, we start from zero this weekend and you have to win points and win points and win points.

“Everyone starts, since I arrived here in the first season, people say it’s completely different to the other leagues and it’s more difficult where everyone can beat everyone. It’s true, I felt it.

“Two teams, Man City and Liverpool have raised the bar. Now you need 90, 90, 90, 90, 90 to be champions, every season. Leicester is a fantastic team who join Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea, United, Liverpool and ourselves to be contenders. We start for everyone to be in that situation. I know how difficult it is all contenders in this league. Always has been always will be. This is what we have to do.”
