Patrick Bamford seals new long-term contract with Leeds

Leeds United is putting all the key pieces into place on the chessboard this summer in a bid to offer long-term stability at Elland Road after key striker Patrick Bamford signed a new 5-year contract extension in the heart of Yorkshire.

The England U21 international comes off back-to-back seasons where his goals leading the line under Marcelo Bielsa not only helped Leeds finally claw their way back to the top echelon of English football but spurned them on in a 2020-21 campaign that ended with the club finishing 9th and only a handful of points behind traditional big-six clubs Arsenal and Tottenham.

Now 27-years-old and at the beginning of the prime years in his career, Bamford is on the hunt to qualify for Europe which is an ambition shared by the club in equal measure;

“It was something that was spoken about at the end of last season, I wanted to try and get it sorted as soon as possible before this season started. It dragged on a bit because of the Euros, everyone was busy. It took a bit of time but I’m really happy to finally have tied down my long-term future.

As a person, I’m always wanting to improve and am always chasing something else. It’s almost like we’re growing at the same rate. The club wants to get back to where it was, hopefully reaching Europe at some point, but that’s my ambition as well. So while they are matching, it is obviously perfectly suited.”

Bamford has not been the only integral piece of the Leeds puzzle to commit their future to the club this summer, either. Both beloved manager Marcelo Bielsa and young goalkeeping stalwart Illan Meslier signed on the dotted line to extend their stays in Yorkshire.

Leeds continue to target stability as Bamford becomes third key man to sign a new deal

Bielsa added on an additional year to his terms of service that will see him at the club until the end of the 2021-22 season, while Meslier – a French U21 international – agreed to terms that potentially lock him in until 2026.

The young Frenchman certainly justified new terms after an impressive 2020-21 Premier League campaign that saw him register eleven clean sheets while boasting 3.83saves/90min, good enough to top the list of any Premier League keeper last term.

If European football is to be the ultimate aim for Leeds moving forward, they have certainly inched one step closer to achieving their goals while taking care of their own.
