Parliamentary Standing Committee Approved Revised Data Protection Bill: IT Minister

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Thursday that the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology had approved the revised Data Protection Bill.

Vaishnaw, a bureaucrat-turned-politician who currently manages the IT portfolio, said an advanced copy of the revised data protection bill had been shared with the committee.

“I would like to share a good news that the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information and Communications Technology…before this bill was introduced in Parliament, they gave a big thumbs up,” Vaishnaw said during his speech at the annual NTLF here.

In 2021, the government withdrew an earlier version of the same bill after a series of changes suggested by a joint parliamentary committee and promised to introduce a new bill, which it did at the end of the year. last.

Debjani Ghosh, chairman of the computer industry lobby Nasscom, said the bill needed to be passed sooner and hoped it would pass this year.

Vaishnaw said that when it comes to technology regulation, the world is at a complex time where each country looks at the issue in a different way.

India’s aim will be to keep its aspirations in mind while taking a call on the subject and navigate the environment accordingly, he said, adding that no country should copy the other when formulating its laws.

Vaishnaw, who attended the World Economic Forum in Davos in January, said there was increased confidence in India on the world stage.

He said Indian companies will have to be careful not to over-promise when integrating into the global supply chain with their products and services.

“Promise what we can do, never overpromise,” the minister told delegates at the summit, asking industry to focus on innovation and people.
