Oxenfree II: Lost Signals sets July release date on Netflix, PlayStation and PC

Oxenfree II: Lost Signals finally has a release date. During the Nintendo Indie World Showcase, held early Thursday, developer Night School Studio confirmed that its long-delayed supernatural thriller sequel is now coming July 12th to PC, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Netflix. While the follow-up wasn’t initially tied to the original Oxenfree, a series of updates in 2021 added radio transitions that would provide context for some future villains, a group called Parentage. Later that year, Oxenfree II: Lost Signals was delayed to 2023, in an attempt to add more localization options.

Night School Studio also released a trailer for Oxenfree II: Lost Signals, which revolves around a new character Riley, an environmental researcher back in her hometown of Camena. This sequel takes place five years after the original and has you investigating strange electromagnetic waves that are causing interference with radio and electrical equipment. It’s almost like the presence of a poltergeist – TVs go on and off, airplanes are unable to navigate, and all radio stations feel helpless against static electricity. In 2016, Oxenfree, a group of Edwards Island teenagers inadvertently opened a portal, allowing free travel between realities and timelines – similar to Stranger Things.

But now, members of a cult group, the aforementioned Parentage, have attempted to open a new portal and pull out something sinister. “Did you see anyone else around?” We’ve been everywhere,” Riley tells his co-star in the Oxenfree II: Lost Signals trailer, hinting that they’re walking through a ghost town and the cult might have something to do with it. The game operates on a simple point-and-click mechanic, where you tap into ghostly frequencies using the “radio mechanic” signature as a way to communicate with supernatural entities and travel back in time through fissures in natural space. The trailer offers glimpses of a bunch of unnatural occurrences such as a glitching demon, force levitating characters, and a strange rocking house.

On top of that you have general navigation, which includes rock climbing and abseiling through the hauntingly beautiful landscape of Camena. There’s also a new “Walkie-Talkie Chat System” that lets you interact with saved contacts and talk to locals to piece together the mystery surrounding the town. Night School Studio was the first developer Netflix acquired as part of the streamer’s pivot to gaming content. The launch date reveal for Oxenfree II: Lost Signals comes following Netflix’s announcement of a list of 40 new games coming to its platform in 2023.

Oxenfree II: Lost Signals is out July 12 on PC (Steam), PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Netflix. The first Oxenfree game is currently available to Netflix subscribers as a free download.
