Story: What happens when you donate your body to science?

Raison: Sometimes the best stories answer questions you didn’t even know you had, and Abby’s beautifully written story of body trusses is a perfect example. It deals with a subject we don’t talk about enough – death and, more specifically, our dead bodies – with a truly hard-to-balance mix of curiosity, compassion, and great attention to detail. It was such a pleasure to read, and if you missed it the first time, I highly recommend it now!

Story: Who is responsible for climate change? Three tables explain.

Raison: I’ve learned so much from Casey Crownhart’s stellar climate reports this year, but I think this article about who’s responsible for climate change will stick with me long into 2022. She does such an incredible job of putting big, big issues into context ahead of us, and in this case behind us, without it feeling completely catastrophic. (His The Spark newsletter is always a good read, too.)

Story: Deception, exploited workers and cash donations: how Worldcoin recruited its first half million test users

Raison: One of my favorite stories this year was the Worldcoin survey conducted by Eileen and Adi. The reporting on this story was so substantial and looked closely at the predatory data mining practices that so many companies are guilty of. I really enjoyed the truly global reach of this story and the authors’ examination of how the company’s altruistic crypto enthusiasm stacks up against the harrowing reality of its implementation.
