Introduction

The only foldable that’s so different from the standard form factor, the late 2021 Oppo Find N, has just been replaced in the form of the Find N2. A year later, almost to the day, the N2 is once again defying size and proportion standards in the “full-size” phone-tablet space. Let’s see what has changed.

Most noticeable, if not necessarily obvious, is the weight reduction – the Find N(1) may have been small, but it was dense and just as heavy as the big ones. The new model is now lighter than an iPhone 14 Pro Max. The tiny differences in dimensions are mostly immaterial, but what’s ultimately important is that the Find N2 is a nicely compact phone with a sensible aspect ratio when folded, and a small tablet in landscape when unfolded – you can’t get that anywhere else.

Another important development concerns the camera system. By necessity not quite state of the art in this regard, foldables usually compromise based on size, and the Find N had a rather meh setup with no AF on the ultrawide and a pretty basic telecamera . The Find N2 elevates that to more “proper” status on paper, bringing larger sensors to ultrawide and tele, and adding AF on the former. It’s not a “cameraphone” yet, but definitely a step forward.

The N2 also gets a chipset update, as usual, but it’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and not Gen 2 – another year the foldable Find will lag behind the flagships of the day. A few charging developments complete the list of “major” changes this year – a welcome jump from 33W charging to 67W, countered by an unfortunate but understandable scrapping of the wireless charging coil (the thin and light were a higher priority).

What hasn’t changed and what the spec sheet won’t tell you is that the Find N2 will remain exclusive to its home market. The Find N2 Flip is as close to a foldable Oppo as it gets outside of China (perhaps).

Unboxing the Oppo Find N2

The Find N2 comes in a box similar to the previous generation – it’s the same kinetic design where opening the lid lifts the phone compartment towards you. It’s not all black this time – the top is painted a light bluish gray. And while the handset may have shrunk in size and lost weight, its packaging has actually grown in all three directions – totaling a 30 per cent increase in volume. Hmm. For what it’s worth, however, there’s more too.

The charger is beefier – in spec, at least, if not so much in physical size (67W versus 33W). A cable is also included (USB-A-to-C).

But there’s a case this time around, an accessory that the Find N was missing. ‘it always stays in place without applying them), while the half that covers the back is a snap-on type only. The back is covered in leatherette in a greenish hue to go with the color scheme of the phone.

Another nice touch for this generation is the included microfiber cloth. It’s worth the money, of course, but it’s the gesture that counts.
