Official: Aston Villa sign Danny Ings from Southampton

Ings joins Southampton

In a return to the transfers of old, with no pre-amble or speculation whatsoever, Aston Villa have announced the signing of Southampton striker Danny Ings.

The striker had previously turned down a new contract at St. Mary’s, saying he wanted to test himself at a higher level, thought to mean Champions League clubs.

However, it is Aston Villa, who finished just four places (and 12 points) ahead of Ings’ former club, that have snapped up the England international, who netted 12 times in 29 Premier League appearances, for a reported 30 million pound fee.

A change of system?

Of course, the major news surrounding Villa is the imminent departure of Jack Grealish to Manchester City for a British record fee.

With Emiliano Buendia and Leon Bailey already having arrived to strengthen the attack, could the arrival of Danny Ings prompt a change of formation for Dean Smith.

Villa do already have a very competent forward in the shape of Ollie Watkins, who scored 14 times and assisted a further 5 in his debut Premier League campaign, which raises the question as to how both will be incorporated.

The logical explanation would be to change to a formation featuring two strikers, as Ings is used to from his time at Southampton, with Buendia and Bailey occupying the wide berths.

One thing is for certain though, Aston Villa will be a fun side to watch this season.
