Nokia unveils Pure UI, a new user interface design language

Nokia’s design team came up with a new UI design language called Pure UI. This is intended for use on Nokia phones, of course, but also on all sorts of other Nokia products.

The design is meant to be cohesive, flexible, and scalable and has a clean, minimalist look, which is the main design trend right now. There are several components, starting with templates and guidelines that determine the overall look.

An important part of the new look is the Nokia Pure typeface, which will be used throughout the user interface.

New icons have also been designed for Pure. They are based on strokes, which can vary in thickness to match the display requirements and capabilities of a given device. They also include smooth animations when a particular component needs to grab the user’s attention.

The Nokia team has also prepared standard elements that designers can use to quickly create consistent screens.

Dark mode is supported, of course, with elements and icons adjusting their styles accordingly.

So far, Nokia phones have stuck close to the stock Android look, but we should see a push towards Pure UI adoption. There’s no mention of how long that will happen, though.

Again, this will be used on phones, but also on other devices – Nokia Pure UI has powerful components that can be used to create complex web dashboards, for example. The interface is designed to scale from tiny wrist-worn displays to large wall panels.
