“No Disrespect to Floyd”: Amir Khan Warns About Exhibition Matches in Boxing

Exhibition fights have taken over the boxing world and they’ve hooked in millions of fans. Hence, it seems that exhibitions are the new trend wherein bigwigs from many verticals, including boxing, appear in the ring to entertain the fans.

Boxing legends like Floyd Mayweather, Mike Tyson, and Roy Jones Jr have taken up this trend. However, the British boxing sensation, Amir Khan, who isn’t quite in favor of this, addressed it on Last Stand Podcast with Brian Custer.

When Custer asked him whether he’d like to return to the ring to fight for a championship bout or an exhibition bout, Khan said, “No, I mean, look with me, it’s gonna have to be a championship look. I’m not really a big fan of that exhibition thing. No disrespect to Floyd and other fighters who are doing that because, I just think, it’s not good for the sport of boxing.”

“People are not taking boxing seriously. And you know boxing is a sport where I think the time they are going to start taking it seriously is when someone gets badly hurt.”

Khan, who has remained out of the limelight for a while, is keen to make his return to the game. However, in his above statement, the British boxer made it pretty clear that he won’t take up any exhibition fights.

Is Amir Khan correct on his point?

There’s a huge chunk of boxers who favor exhibition fights as they think it’s taking the sport to a whole new level. But there are also veterans like Amir Khan who believe that exhibition fights are deteriorating the essence of real boxing bouts.

That said, everyone has their specific notions on this subject. But in reality, the exhibition/celebrity fights have stirred the fight universe and brought back yesteryear stars. Hence, this only seems to be the beginning of an even better future for more such bouts.
