Women call on president to declare “a national crisis” as they against GBV

Women call on president to declare “a national crisis” as they march against GBVToday is heritage day and women are using this opportunity to create awareness of the alarming rate of gender-based violence by marching through the streets of Johannesburg.

The women’s group is calling on the president to declare the recurring attack on women’s bodies “a national crisis”.

The women are gathered in Roodepoort on Thursday.

Family members of those who lost relatives to gender-based violence are expected to join the march.

One of the organisers of the march against GBV, Palesa Ndarala said they were expecting Tshegofatso Pule’s family to join them.

Earlier this year, eight months pregnant Pule was brutally killed in Johannesburg.

Her body was found hanging from a tree.

“Women are being kidnapped and killed. Children are being raped and killed. The justice system is quiet and the president is quiet.”

“So our disrupting traffic today is us wanting the president to take note of the burning issue. We are afraid, we can’t go anywhere,” said Ndarala.
