WC Agriculture department vows to begin rural safety desk to mitigate farm attacks
Whenever rural communities feel they are under threat, they will be able to reach out to the department directly
On Sunday, the Western Cape Agriculture said by next month, it would begin a rural safety desk, so as to mitigate farm attacks.
Whenever rural communities feel they are under threat, they will be able to reach out to the department directly.
On Sunday, a number of farmers, farmworkers, and other residents dressed in black and lifting white crosses, took steps from the Cape Town CBD and marched over to Parliament to call for a stop to murders in the country.
A poster read “no farmers, no food”, while a truck carrying a tractor read, “stop raping and killing our families.”
Organiser Shaun James said: “Enough is enough. We must stop these murders.”
However, Agriculture MEC Ivan Meyer spoke to the group opposite Parliament and declared he is in support of them.
“Farmers contribute to food security in South Africa and they play a significant role in the economic recovery.”
Meyer further said:
“Next month, I will launch a rural safety desk in the Western Cape so that farmers in rural areas can contact the Department of Agriculture because I must protect the agricultural sector because it is 11% of the economy of the Western Cape.”
