While European countries are still fighting a second wave of COVID-19 infections, Home Affairs Minister – Aaron Motsoaledi said on Tuesday that government had to raise the balance of the risks while it reviews the list of countries that are prevented from paying a visit to South Africa.
A list, which initially prevented people from 60 countries from paying a visit to South Africa, has now been reduced to 22 countries.
About three years ago, South Africa opened its borders for international travel, but attached with strict COVID-19 protocols put in place.
Motsoaledi mentioned that it was a balanced act between preserving the lives and livelihoods.
“The fact of the matter is that this disease came from European countries, so we’ve got to be very careful because we don’t want a second wave. A second wave will cause us to go back to lockdown level 5.”
