Public schools, churches, halls to be used as matric exam centers due to covid-19

Public schools, churches, halls to be used as matric exam centers due to covid-19The Department of Basic Education (DBE) is making preparations to ensure that more space is available to ensure that venues for matrics final exam abides Covid-19 regulations.

Matics students are set to sit their first final exam papers in the next three weeks.

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) indicated that as a result of the unexpected outbreak of the virus, public schools, and other facilities like community halls and church buildings will be used as centers for the exam to create more space for pupils and allow social distancing protocols to be followed.

The department also made it known that pupils who show symptoms of Covid-19 would not be allowed to write the final paper this year but would be given allowed to write supplementary exams next year.

DBE spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga said “in terms of actual preparations, the teachers and invigilators are there and we hope that they too will keep safe so that we don’t have to replace them along the way if they get tested positive.”

Over 30 matrics students were among the teenagers who contracted the virus after visiting a popular night club last weekend.
