Nehawu launch protest over increase in salary

Nehawu launch protest over increase in salaryThe National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) are protesting over the working conditions of their members during this coronavirus pandemic.

They were seen demonstrating outside the Union Buildings on Monday morning.

Nehawu members were seeking questions from President Cyril Ramaphosa over their working conditions.

The demonstrators are demanding an 8% increase in salary for the front line workers fighting COVID-19.

The union revealed that it handed a memorandum to the government two weeks ago on this same matter and nothing had been done.

General secretary Zola Saphetha said that they were keen on their demands and expect a positive response from the government.

Saphetha said: “This settlement agreement is a three-year agreement that came into effect in 2018. We are only going to get paid the last leg of that agreement and unfortunately, there has not been another agreement.”

“It was just a matter of inflation plus one and this agreement was signed at a time when there was no COVID-19.”
