Liquor traders want regulation that will allow sale of alcohol on weekends

Liquor traders want regulation that will allow sale of alcohol on weekendsThe level 1 regulations are not fully in the favour of Liquor traders.

Liquor traders under the banner of the National Liquor Trade Council called on the government to give them the permission to operate over the weekends.

The level 1 lockdown only permits the sale of alcohol at retail outlets from Monday to Friday between 9 am and 5 pm.

The National Liquor Trade Council wrote a formal letter to President Cyril Ramaphosa requesting that regulations guiding the sale of alcohol for off-site consumption to be removed.

The council indicated that the regulation was impacting negatively on their businesses and has led to job losses.

The Liquor Brand Owners Association’s Kurt Moore said they agreed with the call to the government.

“As an industry, we are disappointed that government does not allow off-site consumption outlets to trade in terms of their licensing conditions or at least engage in some trade on weekends.”

The National Liquor Trade Council and other partners indicated that the current regulations have had it’s on harsh take on township-based taverns, bottles stores and independently owned retail traders.
