Hawks discover abalone drying facility worth R1.6 million

Hawks discover abalone drying facility worth R1.6 million

The Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team led an integrated intelligence-driven operation that discovered an illegal drying facility with abalone that was worth more than R1.6 million.

Earlier this week, a search and seizure took place at the premises located at the storage facility, Koeberg Road, Table View in Cape Town.

The team took hold of dried and already packed valued abalone in the facility. Two suspects were aged 41 and 31 and were apprehended and faced charges for contravening the Marine Living Resources Act.

Hawks made the arrest, but in Collaboration with Crime Intelligence and officials from the Department of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF).

The case against the two will be heard before Cape Town Magistrate Court on Friday, 16 October 2020.

The Hawks’ Zinzi Hani said:

The team seized dry and already packed abalone inside the facility. Two suspects aged 31 and 41 were arrested and subsequently charged with contravening the Marine Living Resources Act.”
