DA condemns Prasa’s rail infrastructure security

DA condemns Prasa’s rail infrastructure securitySeems the DA is not pleased with the railway infrastructure security system.

The Democratic Alliance’s caucus in the Western Cape on Tuesday described the system’s security as ineffective.

It said that even with the fact that the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) is working on sharpening its security around its rail infrastructure, the effort remains little as the number of people involved in railway theft keeps going higher.

The party’s spokesperson in WC, Daylin Mitchell said that he had written to provincial Transport MEC, Bonginkosi Madikizela to give more details on how bad the security system is.

“In the Western Cape, the central line is still not fully operational. Prasa has failed in efforts to get commuters to work, but they have also equally failed against the battle against theft and vandalism.”

“Over 400 people have been arrested in connection with vandalism amounting to a total of 370 years’ worth of convictions,” Mitchell said.

The country’s rail network is usually a targeted spot for criminals.

Even the passenger rail services in Cape Town rarely run at full capacity even before the COVID-19 lockdown.
