COVID-19 in SA: Cases drop below 1,000; the lowest in months

1,000 new coronavirus infections have been recorded in South Africa, which is the lowest daily record in three months.

However, the Health Department still warns that the country should be mindful of a second wave.

In Africa, South Africa is the hardest-hit country, recording over half of the continent’s more than 1.3 million coronavirus cases.

But there has been a decrease in the number of new infections with an average record of 12,000 in July.

On Monday, South Africa had a record of 854 new cases which took the total number to 639,362. This was according to the report from the Health Department overnight.

It also recorded 115 more COVID-19 related deaths, which took the total death toll to 15,004.

We are encouraged to see some key indicators showing improvement in the state of the South African pandemic,” Mkhize said in a statement on Friday.

But he cautioned that “the threat of a second wave remains very real.”
