Consistent attacks on emergency services officials now worrisome
The City of Cape Town (CoCT) made it known that it was bothered about the attacks on its frontline staff.
On Sunday, it said the attacks were becoming too consistent.
Just recently, two firefighters were assaulted and robbed at gunpoint in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The firefighters were on their way to respond to an emergency call in Kraaifontein when they were attacked.
The CoCT called on the public with relevant information regarding the attack on two firefighters in Wallacedene to come forward to report it.
The Brackenfell crew members were deployed to the community to attend to a call from a person who reported a structural fire in the early hours of Saturday morning.
Shortly after the two officials arrived, they navigated through the structures to investigate the source of the smoke.
While investigating, some three men accosted and robbed them of their belongings at gunpoint.
JP Smith, the Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security said:
“It turned out there was no structural fire as reported, which makes it clear that this was an ambush.”
“These officers provide a lifesaving service and every incident of this nature chips away at the trust between the fire service and the communities they serve”.
The officials were rushed to the hospital for treatment.
