Annual Festival of lights cancelled in Cape Town amid Covid-19

Annual Festival of lights cancelled in Cape Town amid Covid-19Annual festive lights switch-on event for 2020 has been cancelled by the City of Cape Town.

This festival was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The iconic, free, open-air event holds in the Mother City annually.

It marked its 50th anniversary last year.

Over a hundred thousand people descend on the Cape Town CBD for the annual switching on of the lights.

As a result of the deadly Coronavirus, the iconic festival of lights would not hold this year.

The City’s JP Smith explained that it was necessary to pause the event for the safety of all involved.

He also made it known that this is due to the pandemic and the extension of the National Disaster Management Act which restricts the number of people allowed at public gatherings.

He added that the municipality is working on cutting down on spending, in light of the adverse impact of the pandemic on the economy.
