Anaesthetist accused of culpable homicide, Dr Abdulhay Munshi allegedly shot dead
Johannesburg prominent anaesthetist, Dr Abdulhay Munshi who was charged to court over the death of his patient has been reported dead.
The Medical Protection Society has confirmed his death in a statement.
“Medical Protection Society (MPS) is shocked and saddened to hear about the death of Dr Abdulhay Munshi,” the society said.
“The thoughts and prayers of MPS and SA’s health-care profession are with Dr Munshi’s family during this sad time.”
The medical fraternity mourned Munshi’s death.
Reports claimed that Munshi was shot dead on Wednesday.
Although, the police confirmed the shooting incident but did not disclose his name.
According to police spokesperson, Brig Mathapelo Peters said the shooting was carried out by unknown suspects on Wednesday in Norwood.
“Police are at this stage not at liberty to disclose or confirm the deceased’s identity.”
“The motive for the shooting is yet to be determined,” Peters said
Munshi and Prof Peter Beale were blamed for the death of a 10-year-old patient after surgery.
They were charged with culpable homicide.
10-year-old Zayaan Sayed, died at Netcare’s Park Lane Clinic in October last year.
He died hours after Beale performed what was meant to be a routine laparoscopic operation to stop reflux.
The duo were still out on R10,000 bail each and made their last court appearance on August 31.
Their case was postponed to November 16.
Meanwhile, police have called for any eyewitnesses with credible information on the incident to come forward.
“Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or have information that could lead towards the apprehension of the suspect(s) is urged to report to the nearest police station or call the crime stop number 08600 10111. Information may be provided anonymously,” said Peters.
