Newcastle issued Sven Botman roadblock

Newcastle United are looking to strengthen their squad in order to battle relegation this January, with new owners willing to splash the cash in order to keep them in the Premier League.

They have already seemingly tied up a deal for England defender Kieran Trippier, but are also looking to add a centre-back, midfielder and potential striker replacement for Callum Wilson, who faces a spell on the sidelines.

But, they have hit something of a roadblock when it comes to their hunt for a centre-back, with Lille refusing their advances for highly-rated youngster Sven Botman, even for a hefty 35 million euro fee that the Magpies have reportedly offered the Ligue 1 outfit.

And now, it seems as though they have a backup plan.

Tottenham man in the sights

Their backup? Tottenham Hotspur outcast Joe Rodon.

CBS report that:

The 24-year-old is a ball-playing defender valued by Spurs at around $27 million. Sources told CBS Sports that Newcastle view the price tag as too high, but would be open to a loan deal.

A loan move could suit all parties too, with Rodon clearly a talented defender but starved of opportunities in the Tottenham first team this season, and needing to rebuild his confidence elsewhere in order to return to his best and potentially nail down a starting berth in north London.

For Newcastle, it could be a low-cost addition that would instantly improve them. What’s not to like?
