Newcastle sound out potential deal for Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Alassane Pléa

Newcastle gain interest in Pléa

The laundry list of players Newcastle United continues to be linked with has gotten just a little bit longer today after rumors surfaced linking the Magpies with interest in Borussia Mönchengladbach forward Alassane Pléa.

French outlet L’Equipe reported the link earlier today as Newcastle continues their search for further attacking reinforcements in the wake of the serious injury suffered by key striker Callum Wilson, regardless of already completing a deal for Burnley’s Chris Wood.

Pléa is one of a cadre of Die Fohlen players who could be headed for the exit queue at Borussia-Park both this money as well as summer window at the conclusion of the current campaign, with both Denis Zakaria and Matthias Ginter looking likely to leave as well.

The French international would certainly suit Newcastle on a tactical level given his versatility in multiple positions, while L’Equipe cites his friendship with Magpies star Allan Saint-Maximin from their joint-stint at OGC Nice as a potentially influential factor in any deal that may be struck after ASM gave council on his former clubmate.

His deal with Gladbach runs out after next season, and with an extension not on the horizon, the club will certainly look to offload him within the next six months.

Magpies chasing three other potential signings

With Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood in the door, Newcastle has had a solid start to the massive rebuilding job on Tyneside but there remains plenty of work to be done before the conclusion of the January window.

Unfortunately for Magpies boss Eddie Howe, additional reinforcements may be difficult to come by given the level of players the club is hoping to attract after they have had bids for Sevilla center-back Diego Carlos, Atalanta forward Duván Zapata, and Atalanta left-back Robin Gosens all recently rejected.

But the club’s current situation in the Premier League will undoubtedly be a massive stumbling block that they cannot immediately rectify.

Signing Chris Wood from a club just about level with Newcastle in the Premier League, for more wages, was hardly going to be difficult by comparison. But players the likes of Carlos, Zapata, and Gosens who ply their trade for clubs who are in the top echelon of domestic competition while featuring in Europe will be much more difficult to prize away.

The concluded deal for Trippier dispels that notion a little bit, though Trippier’s connection to the Premier League by both the nation he hails from and his previous experience in the league served the Magpies in good stead. They will not have that luxury with the other targets they are trying to move for. The winter window may well end in overall disappointment.
