Newcastle prepare bid for former Aston Villa midfielder in January spree
Newcastle to spend big
Now under new ownership, Newcastle United are looking to outspend their relegation rivals to avoid being condemned to the Championship come the end of the season.
The Magpies have won just one game all season, and sit two points clear of safety, though they have played more games than the sides above them.
And while their 1-1 draw with Manchester United was impressive, it is wins that Newcastle need, and soon.

To that end, they have already made contact with Atletico Madrid full-back Kieran Trippier, as they look to do business at the beginning of the window ahead of a busy January schedule.

The Tyneside outfit are also looking to bring in a new centre-back and another left back, while additions further up the pitch are needed too.
Not least in midfield.
Jordan Veretout the latest addition?
Now, as per FootMercato, the Magpies have made contact with Roma for a potential deal that would see Jordan Veretout head to Tyneside.
The former Aston Villa midfielder has been a mainstay of the Roma side this season, starting all 18 Serie A outings for Jose Mourinho and co., but the Italian club are known to be on the hunt for new midfield options, having made contact with Arsenal over a potential move for Ainsley Maitland-Niles.
