Newcastle new signing a doubt and Eddie Howe issues worrying update on Callum Wilson

Newcastle new signing a doubt and Eddie Howe issues worrying update on Callum Wilson

Newcastle have been dealt something of a potential blow ahead of their clash with Everton on Tuesday evening as it has emerged that new signing Dan Burn is a doubt for the game.

The former Brighton defender, signed on deadline day after numerous other attempts at adding a centre-back in January had failed, has a toe problem that could well keep him out of the tie, leaving options thin for the Magpies.

Ciaran Clark was left out of their 25 man squad registered for the Premier League as a direct result of Burn’s addition, despite Clark having played 13 times for the Tyneside outfit this season.

Fortunately, midfielder Joelinton has recovered from the issue that forced him off in their 1-0 win over Leeds United, while it is still unknown even to Eddie Howe whether new big-money addition Bruno Guimaraes will be handed his debut from the off on Tuesday night.

However, there was bad news further forward.

Wilson update not good

Asked for an update on star forward Callum Wilson, Eddie Howe confirmed Newcastle fans’ worst fears and revealed he is still set to be sidelined for a long time.

“Callum was recently on crutches and is now walking normally’, Howe revealed.

“From that update you can realise it is quite slow. It is not short term and hopefully he can make the last few games of the season’

There is no fixed date for his return, however.

“There is a time when he is due back but it is not absolutely clear. It has been slow progress’, the Magpie boss explained.

‘I don’t know on time. We are taking it on symptoms rather than giving a time. I think with Callum’s injury, I said at the start, it wasn’t clear on the first scan quite what the injury was.’

This puts extra onus on January signing Chris Wood to lead the line, as the last recognised forward at the club. Meanwhile, it could prove massive in the context of avoiding relegation come May.
